Property Industry Foundation chief executive Kate Mills reflects on three decades of industry collaboration to end youth homelessness and the 300 bedrooms it has helped deliver for young Australians across the eastern seaboard as the organisation marks its 30th anniversary.

A home is more than four walls and a roof. It’s the foundation for an ordinary life.

It’s where young people can sleep safely, focus on school or work, build relationships, and begin to imagine a future. Without that foundation, everything else becomes harder.

Thirty years ago, a group of senior leaders from across the property industry came together with a simple but powerful idea: what if we worked together, rather than alone, to help end youth homelessness?

That idea became the Property Industry Foundation.

Today, thanks to the generosity, commitment and collaboration of our industry, we have delivered 300 additional bedrooms for young Australians experiencing homelessness across Australia’s eastern seaboard.

These are safe places that simply would not exist without the support of our donors, partners, volunteers and the countless individuals who have shared our vision over the past three decades.

Together, we’ve proven what is possible when an industry unites behind a common purpose.

But our work is far from finished.

Tonight, more than 46,000 young Australians will go to sleep without a safe, stable place to call home.

Homelessness among 19 to 24-year-olds has increased over the past 15 years, and more than one in three young people leaving the care system will experience homelessness as they transition into adulthood. For many, that first experience becomes the beginning of a cycle that is incredibly difficult to break.

That’s why every bedroom matters.

Every project we deliver provides much more than accommodation. It creates stability, dignity and opportunity.

Independent analysis shows that every dollar donated to the Property Industry Foundation generates $3.70 in social value, demonstrating the lasting impact our supporters make in young people’s lives.

Over the past year alone, our industry has helped deliver life-changing projects across Australia.

In Victoria, Haven House Shepparton (The Nest) has created six bedrooms across three two-bedroom homes, providing young mothers with up to five years of supported independent living as they build secure futures for themselves and their children.

In Queensland, Haven House Logan (Jinndii Waijung) has delivered nine bedrooms across four self-contained units for vulnerable young mothers, including women escaping domestic and family violence.

For young women in Sydney facing some of the most challenging times of their lives, Haven House Inner West now offers something many have never had: a trauma-informed place of their own. The refurbishment created seven bedrooms within a crisis refuge in New South Wales.

These projects are much more than buildings. They represent hope, partnership and the extraordinary impact that can be achieved when an entire industry chooses to give back.

As we celebrate 30 years of the Property Industry Foundation, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. More importantly, I’m excited by what we can achieve over the next 30 years.

Because every young person deserves the opportunity to build an ordinary life.

Together, we can continue building safe homes, brighter futures and stronger communities.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

As we mark 30 years, we’re not slowing down, we’re setting our sights on the next 300 bedrooms. Your support, at any level, helps make that possible. Every donation brings another young Australian closer to a safe place to call home.
